Heysham – Lancaster cycle route update

In an effort to build public support for our proposed Heysham to Lancaster cycle route, leafleting events were held around the White Lund area.  The two places chosen were the roundabout junction of Ovangle Rd/Heysham bypass and at the entrance to Salt Ayre sports centre.  These locations mark the end of the end of dedicated cycle routes to Heysham.

Leaflets were prepared to describe the rationale behind the Heysham-Lancaster cycle route, which will save cyclists the necessity to use either Ovangle Rd or the Heysham bypass.  These current routes are not safe enough for family cycling, and the more direct cycle route to the centre of Heysham would reduce the journey by a full mile from Salt Ayre sports centre, from 4.5 to 3.5 miles.

Paul and Bridget discussed our plans with 8 cyclists at Ovangle Rd/Heysham bypass on an early Wednesday morning, then a further 5 cyclists in Heysham.  Paul, Bridget and Patricia stopped a further 7 cyclists outside Salt Ayre on a cold Friday evening, as captured in the photograph.  It was felt to be a very worthwhile way to make contact with cyclists, who seemed very happy to stop and were very encouraging about our plans.  We are hopeful that some new memberships to Dynamo and petitioning of Heysham Councillors will result.  We discussed that we really need to take along a paper petition to future events, as well as to investigate online petitions.
