Lancashire County Council received £5 million funding from central government under the Local Sustainable Transport Fund project, which so far it has spent on small-scale initiatives. (So small, indeed, that you might not have noticed them.) With the remaining funds (which have to be spent by March 2015) it plans to tarmac the footpath through Greaves Park, Lancaster, to turn it into a shared-use path. Viewed as a cycling measure, this should not go ahead, and Dynamo objects strongly to it (see our response). It does not provide any strategic improvement to the cycle network of the district and should not be seen as “sustainable transport”. If the money is burning a hole in the County’s pocket, they can improve the cycle infrastructure around the Pointer roundabout.

I thought it worth while to pedal the route to see how I found it in practice. Having done so this I can report that whilst the start of the route on Bowerham Road looks promising, in that it heads off in the right direction, it is quickly apparent that this would be the most winding, hilly and truly pointless cycle journey that anybody had every made. I had to walk with my bike on quite a few occasions because it was too steep and muddy, which was very frustrating. Even a bored mountain cyclist would think again and would make a dash for the hills to avoid such a dissatisfying journey. When the route has climbed up to the back of Parkfield Drive there are imaginings of breaking out back into civilization, but then all height gained is lost and you find yourself stuck back in the middle of Belle View Terrace. That anybody would make this journey to cycle around Lancaster, by turning off from the A6 as they start to descend Greaves Road is completely inconceivable. This route should be left to the dog walkers. As a cycle route it scored an approval rating of zero from me.
