Bad news on station bicycle racks

falco vertDynamo has learned that the City Council does not consider that the design of the proposed cycle racks at Lancaster railway station requires full planning permission.  This means that Virgin Trains will be free to put in whatever racks they like.

The planning people at the City Council have told Virgin’s agent of the concerns raised by Dynamo and others about the cyclist-unfriendly design of the racks, but given Virgin’s intransigence so far it doesn’t look as if they will relent.

    Hi,

The station has also now permanently shut the gates from the cycle path directly on to the platform. The station staff tell me it’s to stop “druggies”, and to prevent cycle theft. I can’t say I’ve ever noticed much evidence of cycle theft there, and I find it inconvenient having to risk pedestrians’ clothes through close interaction with my bike on the way through the narrow corridor. But I guess others may have experienced theft directly and have a different perspective to me.
